HYDROTHERAPY TREATMENTS *
Hydrotherapy treatments take place with qualified hydrotherapists in either the swimming pool or under water treadmill.
The swimming pool can be a relaxing environment for elderly dogs to swim at their own pace and feel pain free enjoying the weightlessness or it can be a fun environment for the younger more mobile of our freinds. Offering non weight bearing rehabilitation, including massage and physiotherapy exercises as well as play and swimming correctly, each dog gets something different out of the pool expereince.
Dogs will be fitted with a floatation coat or a harness and at least one hydrotherapist will be with your dog in the pool providing treatment and monitoring vital statistics throughout the session. Your dog will be encouraged to feel relaxed and confident and hopefully have some fun.
Under Water Treadmill
The water treadmill is perfect where the patient needs additional support and guidance from beginning to walk again to correcting their gait, stride and range of motion. It is perfect for neurological and spinal conditions and for dogs that need rehabilitation following hip replacements and ruptured cruciate ligament surgery.
A hydrotherapist will be with your dog in the water treadmill to provide support and apply specific techniques. Another hydrotherapist provides analysis to enable these techniques to be targeted precisely in order to achieve the best outcome for the patient in that session. Each session is closely monitored and adjusted as the patient improves.
* Physiotherapy treatments can be combined with hydrotherapy sessions to give your dog a complete treatment plan. Look for our Hydro-Physio sessions in our 'Our Hydrotherapy Pool' section. Sometimes we will advise physiotherapy prior to or during a hydrotherapy session.
Lauren McMahon is a qualified physiotherapist and a member of the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists (NAVP). As well as land based physiotherapy, Lauren can also combine physiotherapy in the pool or underwater treadmill with the hydrotherapist, enabling your dog to benefit from both treatments.
Samantha Rodwell from Country Physio is a chartered physiotherapist and small animal assessments and treatments can either take place in the Physiotherapy clinic at Hydropets or in the secure environment of your own home.
